Common Medications to Cure Jock Itch

There are several common, mostly over-the-counter medications, available in leading drugstores to cure jock itch or to help relief the symptoms of the skin disorders.  But before trying these over-the-counter medicines, it is always best and prudent to consult your skin doctor who cam base his prescription on your medical history and certain physical examinations.  Be aware also of the contents of these over-the-counter medicines and you may be allergic to some.

Over-the-counter medications include:

Anti-fungal creams.  An ingredient found in most creams that is effective in curing jock itch is terbinafine, a safe medication that has practically very rare side effect.  Others are miconazole and clotrimazole. There are many brands containing these ingredients with which you can choose from.

If the medication cause you some skin irritation, discontinue the use and consult your skin doctor right away.

Although over-the-counter medicines are generally safe to use, there is still no substitute for proper consultation with your skin doctor.

Oral medications.  These are usually prescribed medications.  In order to avail, one must have consulted his skin doctor as these drugs are associated with certain side effects. 

These medications are often prescribed to treat chronic or severe cases of jock itch.

They may be prescribed if the person with jock itch does not respond to over-the-counter medications. 

Depending on severity of the infection, oral medications may be used in 1 to several weeks. 

In the treatment of jock itch, whether over-the-counter or prescribed, what is important is that the person who suffers from such condition follows the instructions religiously.  Also, it will help to always maintain good hygiene, the best defense against jock itch or any fungal infections for that matter.
